After yesterday’s post I thought it was time for something a little bit more festive and upbeat. What better way than answering a bunch of questions that revolve around Christmas? Without further ado, I present to you: the Christmas Tag.
1. What is your favourite Christmas film?
Love Actually. Hands down.
2. Have you ever had a white Christmas?
We used to have white Christmases all the time over here, so yeah, lots of my childhood Christmas holidays were spent having snowball fights with my sister and building snowmen. God, I miss those days!
3. Where do you usually spend your holiday?
We celebrate Christmas Eve at my sister’s, because she’s got the biggest house (and a less noisy dog, ha). Christmas Day is spent at home with my boyfriend and my parents.
4. What is your favourite Christmas song?
There are a lot of Christmas songs I love blasting through the speakers when this time of year comes around, but no song gets me in the festive spirit like Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You. It’s a cliché, I know, but frankly I don’t care. It’s just that one song that immediately puts me in the mood for Christmas.
5. Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?
Yep! We do a Secret Santa because the family was starting to get too big to buy presents for everyone. When I was little I used to love knowing beforehand who people’s Secret Santa was, because I wasn’t participating yet and they were allowed to tell me, haha.
6. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?
Rudolph, Blitzen, Vixen, Prancer, Dancer, Dasher… That’s as far as I get. I don’t even know how many he has in total! And to be fair, I don’t even know if Vixen is one of them?
7. What holiday traditions are you most looking forward to this year?
Decorating the Christmas tree is always something I’m counting down the days for! I actually get upset when my parents dare put it up without me, haha.
8. Is your Christmas tree real or fake?
Unfortunately it’s fake. My mum was getting sick of having to clean up all those pine needles every year, so at a certain point my parents opted to go for a fake one instead and we’ve had it ever since. But since they bought it years and years ago, it’s very obviously fake. I know that nowadays you can buy some very real-looking fake ones, which is what I think I want to do once my boyfriend and I find our own place. As much as I love the idea of a real Christmas tree, I have to be honest: having to clean up the pine needles would not be something I’d want to do either. Not to mention you save a ton of money if you don’t have to buy a new tree every year!
9. What is your all-time favourite holiday treat/food/sweet?
I don’t think Belgium has any typical Christmas treats or sweets (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong here), but there is one culinary tradition we tend to stick to. It’s basically a raclette/grill combination, with the meat grilling on top and the cheese melting beneath it in little individual pans. I don’t think there’s ever been a Christmas where we didn’t eat this. The starters may vary, the desserts are different almost every year, but the main course is always the same. And I love it! It’s also pretty much the only time in a year we get to eat this, so it’s something I look forward to every year.
10. Be honest: do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts better?
I love receiving gifts. Although I do get anxious about having to be excited when you open the present, if you know what I mean? I wouldn’t want to disappoint the gift giver by not acting excited enough. I know this answer makes me seem really selfish, and don’t get me wrong – it’s not that I don’t like buying others presents, it’s just that I get too nervous about them not liking what I bought. I don’t want to disappoint anyone!
11. What is the best Christmas gift you’ve ever received?
This is a tough one! I don’t really know if this one counts as a Christmas gift, but our first ever family dog arrived at our home around Christmas time without me even knowing we were getting a dog. I literally came home from my friend’s house next door(!), and suddenly there was this dog in our house and I was just over the moon; I’d wanted a dog ever since I knew what dogs were, basically. So I’d have to say that, even though it technically wasn’t meant as a Christmas present…
12. What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?
I’d love to go to Australia. It must be such a weird experience to celebrate Christmas in Summer, on the beach, having a barbecue.
13. Are you a pro present wrapper, or do you fail miserably?
I think I’m somewhere in the middle. My presents don’t usually look perfectly wrapped, but they don’t look terrible either. I manage.
14. Most memorable holiday moment?
I’m going to have to refer back to question 11 for this one. I’m never going to forget the moment I arrived back home and was greeted by the most enthusiastic dog I’d ever met, haha.
15. What made you realise the truth about Santa?
To be fair, we don’t really have a Santa here in Belgium – it’s always been pretty obvious my parents were the ones buying the gifts. We do have Sinterklaas, a bishop that brings presents on the 6th of December (I also think Santa is based on him), but I honestly don’t remember when or how I came to realise the truth about that one.
16. Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Do you stick to them?
I used to, yeah. But no, I never stuck to them. This year I’ve decided to not do New Year’s resolutions anymore, and instead set myself smaller goals throughout the year so they feel less daunting and they’re actually things I know I want to work on at that particular moment, or in those particular months.
17. What makes the holidays special for you?
Honestly just spending time with my family. We rarely get to see each other throughout the year (apart from my parents obviously), so Christmas is the perfect time to have a nice, big, cosy catch-up.
I’d love to know your answers to these questions, too! So if you decide to do the Christmas Tag on your own blog, leave your link in the comments and I’ll be sure to check it out. Hopefully I’ll see you again tomorrow with a new post for Blogmas.
